There is something so satisfying about refinishing and repurposing a piece of vintage furniture. Angel Martin, the owner of Madison on Main, has created a store that allows some of Charlotte’s finest local artisans to sell their vintage furniture and custom pieces, such as beds and porch swings. We recently sat down with Angel Martin to find out more about her amazing store.
What’s the story behind the name, Madison on Main?
Madison on Main got its name from my golden retriever, Madison. I’m a huge dog lover and have therapy dogs. Madison is my nine-month-old puppy. Our store is all about your family and home and thought it would be cool to name the store after her and bring her to work. She’s at the shop every now and then.
What attracted you to downtown Pineville?
I had rented booth space at several different shops in the Charlotte and surrounding areas. One of the shops was in Pineville. My husband, Joel, and I decided that we needed to really focus my talents on my own business because I wanted to get into building custom farm tables and also carry some new pieces in addition to repurposing furniture. I looked at other areas in South Charlotte for retail space but came back to Pineville because it is a growing area, yet rent is still affordable. Downtown Main St. is a mini furniture row now with three furniture stores and an antique shop. So far, sales at Madison on Main have been wonderful and the community has been so welcoming.
Tell me a little bit about the local artisans that make up Madison on Main.
We have seven of us at the shop, currently.
Jimmy Connelly is our newest addition. He builds barn doors and porch swings as well as headboards. He does custom work and his pieces are fantastic and affordable!
Funki Monki is a mother/daughter team who has been with me since we opened. They also have a shop in Waxhaw called Funki Monki. Jenny Wright and Tracey Woessner are originally from South Africa and the pieces they find have such flair! They are amazing painters. I worked with Jenny at another shop and when she decided to expand her business, she got a space at my shop. I’m thrilled they are here!
Lara Hull is a talented artisan who has brought some amazing pieces to the shop. She has a great eye and I especially love the homemade decor pieces she brings in. Her furniture is classic and beautifully repurposed, too.
Lynne Mann is another super talented vendor who has been with me since we opened. She and I worked together previously and I love everything she does. She’s also a designer so she’s excellent at helping people put their homes together. And, she has impeccable taste!
Andrah Salgado and her husband Jon have also been with me since the beginning. Andrah was new to repurposing furniture and she and her husband started building things. They build the custom bed we have in the shop and they never cease to amaze me with their talent!
Laura Russ has also been with me since the beginning. She’s got more talent in her pinkie than I could ever think about when it comes to custom signs. You have got to see her work. It’s all stenciled and the pieces are created by her. And they are beautiful and very affordable.
What else would you like our readers to know about Madison on Main?
Customer service is what we try to do well. If we don’t have something you need, we will try to help you locate it. We love what we do and hope it shows in our quality pieces. We are also huge supporters of our military/police/fire and teachers and give discounts to them on pieces they buy. They give so much and we want to give back to them. We also participate in Operation Christmas child and we do donate to different causes when we can. We’d like to be a contributing member of our community.
Madison on Main is located at 326 Main Street in downtown Pineville and is open Tuesday – Saturday, 10-5 and Sunday 12-4.
