Tour de Turns is back in Charlotte! Saturday, August 27th, 2016 marks the 5th annual Tour de Turns charity bike ride that winds through many well-known South Charlotte neighborhoods such as Montibello and Olde Providence. Tour de Turns’ sole objective is to raise money for a local Charlotte charity called Friendship Trays. Friendship Trays’ mission is to provide daily prepared, balanced meals to Charlotte folks that cannot prepare their own meals because of their age or inability to get to a grocery store or prepare meals for themselves. Friendship Trays has 120 volunteers who deliver over 700 meals EVERY DAY!
Recently, I spoke with the founder of Tour de Turns, Lane Holbert. Tour de Turns ultimately came about at the suggestion of his eldest son after he and his dad rode the infamous Booty Loop, an iconic Charlotte cycling route in the Myers Park neighborhood. After two years, Lane, a mountain biker at heart who thought road cycling was dangerous and boring, was finally convinced by a friend to buy a road bike and hit the streets of Charlotte. Unfortunately, it didn’t take long before Lane was brushed by a couple of cars on Rea Road in South Charlotte during a morning ride. That’s when he decided to start riding just streets within his own neighborhood. At first, Lane’s cycling was confined to just Montibello but quickly expanded into a 25 mile loop where 93% of the roads are within neighborhoods. The Tour de Turns route, nicknamed by some of Lane’s cycling buddies because of the many right hand turns, winds through Olde Providence, Town and Country, Governors Square, Mountainbrook, Beverly Woods East, and Bellingrath, to name a few. Then, in 2011, Lane’s son suggested that he should make Tour de Turns a charity ride to raise money for a local charity. And, because Lane’s wife, Karen, had spent ten years as a volunteer delivering food trays to local elderly and shut-in folks, father and son decided Friendship Trays would be a perfect match!
Tour de Turns has grown astronomically from only 52 riders the first year to 362 riders raising over $30,000.00 last year! This year, Tour de Turns anticipates even more riders and revenue to provide much needed funding to Friendship Trays. Money raised during the ride stays in the immediate Charlotte area serving local Charlotte people! There is something for all abilities with a 15-mile route, 25-mile route, or 37-mile route. And the master champs can combine the 25 and 37-mile loops for 62 miles, also known in the cycling world as a “Metric Century”! If you’re up for this challenge, you will also get the pleasure of winding through the shaded Charlotte neighborhoods of Foxcroft, Gleneagles, Baltrusol and Carmel Park.
This year’s Tour de Turns charity ride promises to be one of the best so far. Some of the activities planned are:
* Live Music
* Beer Garden with custom beer, Shade Tree Pale Ale, just for the ride provided by Triple C Brewery
* NCCX Cyclecross Clinic
* King & Queen of the Mountain Competition
